The Nurseries
These artworks evolved from site investigations into the watercress beds in the river Bulbourne in Hertfordshire. Historically, this was a site that produced vast amounts of watercress for the London gentry, an important element of the diet as watercress is high in vitamin C. As well as watercress, the surrounding landscape once housed large vineyards, also long gone.
These collages incorporate rubbings taken from around the site along with photographs of pieces found at the site, flowers, bits of wood, twigs. Aesthetic decisions were made using a dice, introducing an element of chance into the work.
